SEO cannibalisation: when pages compete

Have similar pages for one service? Assess search intent and performance before merging content, changing URLs or treating it as SEO cannibalisation.

Reviewing website visibility with a laptop and notes

SEO cannibalisation is a practical term for situations where similar pages make it difficult to focus on a particular search intent. Two pages mentioning the same keyword are not sufficient evidence of a problem. Their purpose and actual performance matter.

Map the intended task

For each page, record the question it answers and the next action it supports. “How much does a website cost?” and “website development prices” may serve the same task. A guide to comparing proposals can serve a separate purpose if it provides an actual comparison method rather than repeating the pricing article.

Review evidence before merging

In Search Console, inspect which URLs receive impressions for relevant queries. Compare content, links and qualified enquiries. Pages alternating in results do not automatically establish harm; they may answer different contexts.

  • One primary page for a clearly defined commercial intent.
  • Supporting articles with distinct questions and practical value.
  • Internal links explaining their relationship.
  • Titles reflecting genuine differences in content.

Consider three responses

Keep and differentiate pages that serve separate tasks. Merge content when a page adds no independent value, preserving useful material and planning the redirect. Refocus an article when its content is useful but too close to the main service page.

Avoid mechanical fixes

Do not delete pages based only on similar titles. Canonical tags are not a universal solution for distinct articles. Avoid creating another nearly identical page for every reordered keyword phrase. Preserve baseline data before changes and monitor the outcome afterwards.

Can a service page and article coexist?

Yes, when the service page supports supplier selection and the article answers a distinct question. For URL changes, use the migration checks. Request an intent map as part of the audit so each proposed edit has an explicit reason.
