A redesign can change URLs, content and internal links that already bring organic visitors. Reduce risk by retaining useful addresses, mapping necessary changes and testing before launch. No migration plan can guarantee that search performance will remain completely unchanged.
Inventory valuable pages
Use the sitemap, Search Console and analytics where access is available. Identify pages generating organic visits, enquiries and external links. Do not remove useful content simply because it does not fit the new layout. Decide whether each page remains, improves or merges into a genuinely relevant alternative.
Map old URLs to new destinations
For each changed address, identify the closest replacement in meaning. Avoid sending every removed page to the homepage. Where no replacement exists, decide the appropriate response for a permanently removed resource. Check for redirect chains and loops.
- Preserve important information where the page’s purpose remains unchanged.
- Point internal links directly to final destinations.
- Check canonical and language relationships.
- Remove accidental indexing restrictions from the public version.
- Include appropriate current URLs in the sitemap.
Test more than the visual design
An attractive screen does not show whether an old URL resolves correctly. Test HTTP behaviour, links and forms separately. On a bilingual website, check both versions: a language switch should lead to the corresponding page rather than unrelated content or the homepage.
Monitor after launch
Watch crawling errors, indexing and the performance of important pages. Compare equivalent periods and account for campaign changes and seasonality. A decline in enquiries may also reflect a broken form, so confirm that submissions arrive.
Should URLs change for better SEO?
Not automatically. Working, understandable addresses may be worth retaining. Changing them creates additional work and migration risk. Include migration as a separate item in the redesign proposal so responsibility for the checks is explicit.
